My History with the Sheraton Mirage, Port Douglas
My journey with the Sheraton began in 1999, when I was invited to undertake a one-month artist residency at the hotel. At the time, my work was deeply inspired by the extraordinary natural beauty of Far North Queensland—particularly the ancient Daintree Rainforest and the vibrant colours and movement of the Great Barrier Reef.
From the very beginning, the residency was a great success. The hotel was impressed not only by my artwork, but also by the way I connected with guests through live painting and a unique, ever-changing display of work. Painting in front of visitors allowed them to experience the creative process first hand and to engage with the stories and landscapes behind each piece.
During this period, I was also running my own galleries in Cairns, and my work evolved significantly over the years. The Sheraton invited me back just two months after my initial residency, and following my second stay, I proposed an idea that would become a defining chapter of my career.
I suggested building an open gallery within the hotel lobby, set among the main garden. The concept was to create a space where art and nature flowed together seamlessly. The hotel embraced the idea, and together we brought it to life. A timber floor was constructed, with permanent easels and plinths winding gently through the garden. Beautifully lit and surrounded by tropical greenery, the gallery became a central focal point of the lobby. Visitors could experience the artwork in a natural environment that directly reflected its inspiration.
I operated from the Sheraton for 11 years. Over that time, my art continued to grow and evolve, shaped by constant interaction with guests from around the world and by daily immersion in the landscape that inspires my work.
When the hotel was eventually sold and renovated, it was difficult to leave such a meaningful space. However, it also marked the beginning of a new chapter in my artistic journey. Seeking change and fresh direction, I moved into the Main Street of Port Douglas, where I opened a new gallery and continued to share my work with the world.
